Learn a Foreign Language

Why would anyone want to learn a foreign language? Actually, there are lots of great reasons, some you've probably never thought of before.

1. Obviously, knowing the language helps when you travel. Nationals appreciate you making the effort to communicate with them in their native tongue, as it shows respect for them and their country, and will open doors for you.

2. It is enriching and broadens your personal world outlook when you can relate, through language, with people of other cultures who live near you.

3. Having a second language can increase job opportunities and career advancement. You may also be able to undertake translation work, which is often well paid.

4. Students often put their language learning into context by examining the nations who speak the language; their history, their people and culture. This adds relevance and interest, which in turn motivates the learning of the language itself.

5. It has been proven by Readers Digest years ago, and others, that the acquiring of additional vocabulary actually adds to a student's I.Q. There are expressive words from other languages for which there is no direct English translation, and it has been shown that language study, and acquiring new words, can help a student do better in all subjects.

6. Strangely enough, the study of other languages can strengthen our knowledge of English. This is especially true when we realise that the foundation of our English language is largely made up of Latin, Greek, Old French and Old German as well as words of other origins.

Alright, so we can see it will be really worthwhile to learn a second language. But what is the best way to learn? Isn't it really hard to do? And expensive?

Well, no, it's not that hard if tackled efficiently. And it need not be expensive. The fastest way, of course, is to go to a foreign country, and just have to learn the language to survive, but we don't all have the luxury of doing that! Of course, young children pick up even multiple languages in a natural way, just as we all learned English from our parents when we were toddlers. But we didn't automatically learn to read and write English - we had to be methodically taught those skills.

So the best way to learn a foreign language is to incorporate both types of learning:

a) 'natural', by surrounding ourselves with, and interacting with, the spoken language, and

b) 'methodical', by following a well devised educational course which will teach the writing and reading skills to truly master all aspects of the language.

Now I admit that creating 'natural' learning opportunities complete with interaction is a challenge. The best resource for this would be an obliging native speaker willing to spend time with you, simply conversing. You could also borrow foreign language children's book and tape sets from your local library.

To truly learn to speak, read and write the language, you also need the 'methodical' approach and use a good language course. With the level of technology available in many homes now, it has become easy to get a high quality course of study which includes even many of the 'natural' learning benefits, like hearing the pronunciation by a native speaker.

If you do not already have firm ideas of what language to begin with, I would recommend learning German. For an English speaker, the alphabet is almost identical (not like Chinese!), a good number of words are the same as in English, such as 'plastic', and 'baby' , and the grammatical structure is not too difficult.

The best resource I have come across, both in quality and value for money, is a product called 'Rocket German'. As the name suggests, it is a very efficient way to learn, taking the student from beginner, through intermediate, all the way to advanced level for the one low price. They even offer a free 'mini' course you can do to show yourself how easy it is, so it's definitely worth a look. Check out their website: 4others.rgerman.hop.clickbank/

Want to Install an Asphalt Driveway?

A nice level, smooth driveway is the fervent wish of many homeowners. In reality, though, it's harder to achieve than one might think. Concrete is expensive and takes a significant amount of time to set. Asphalt is inexpensive and sets within hours.

If you're repairing an existing asphalt driveway, before you consider taking on the more expensive project of laying new asphalt you may want to look at some cheaper alternatives. For a generally cracked, ugly driveway, you can buy driveway sealer and crack sealer from most any hardware or home improvement store. This is the fast, cheap way to seal up cracks, seal the surface as a whole, and black it again. For everything else, you'll want hot-mix asphalt.

Hot-mix asphalt is the very same asphalt you see burly highway road crews laying down. For the homeowner, though, hot-mix asphalt does not involve big machines. It's the same material but the application process is more basic. Hot-mix asphalt is an aggregate of gravel and sand mixed in with hot, liquid asphalt. When we say "hot" we mean it. Hot-mix applies at over 300 online educations F, and quickly cools to a workable 175 online educations F.

With hot-mix asphalt driveway, you have two options: overlay or full-depth asphalt paving. As the name implies, overlay is a thin "overlay" of a thin layer of asphalt driveway over your existing driveway. Your existing driveway, as bad as it might be, still needs to provide a firm, substantial base, or this option will not work. The second option is to jackhammer your existing driveway and lay down a full-depth asphalt driveway.

As you can guess, the full-depth asphalt driveway is the more expensive option. Not only do you incur the cost of jackhammering the existing drive, but you must lay down a bed of gravel before the asphalt. Oh, and did we mention that the layer of asphalt must also be thicker? That adds to the cost, too.

Read up as much on the subject as you can before calling any contractors. The topic of asphalt driveway paving is pretty much dominated by the industry, with few voices dedicated to the consumer.

Songwriters! - Whatcha Doin In Your Rhythm Fit?

I was watching TV recently and I saw a movie that I hadn't seen in a long time that changed musical history. Wow! Where has the time gone? Can you believe that it's been almost 30 years since the movie "Saturday Night Fever" came out and broke all records at the box office and music sales.

Songwriters and Musicians - Do You Want To Get Paid? You need to go out and rent this movie, or even better, buy the soundtrack and study it very closely. Saturday Night Fever is one of the best selling record albums ever made because of one thing, GREAT SONGS.

The level of song craftsmanship is off the hook. The variety of music in this movie covers every single emotion. There's straight dance music, love songs, funk, r & b, pure disco, ballads, and more.

Up and coming songwriters should make it a point to regularly refer to the greats of the past and examine every nuance of their writing. These masters take the craft to a whole new level that still gets them income decades later.

Don't make the mistake of considering artists like the Bee Gees, or Kool and the Gang, as old fashioned and not what you need to study. These people made hits time and time again, proving that it was no accident. Wouldn't you like to have a fraction of their success? You can if you study them carefully.

You can listen to these songs 30 years later and even though styles have changed, a great song lives forever, and that's how you really get paid. Publishing royalties get you paid over and over and over again.

There is a BIG difference between a SONG and a RECORD. Great songs from the 70's and 80's are constantly being redone and sampled by younger writers and artists all the time. As a result, the songwriters of that era are still getting paid time and time again.

The thing that determines whether music sounds modern or old fashioned are the changes to the beat and rhythm. This applies to singing as well as musical instruments. You can even sing the melody to "Mary Had A Little Lamb" over reggae, rock ,or rap and it takes on a new sound each time, but that great and simple melody is still the basis of it all.

Just think about how differently singers such as Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Sara Vaughn, and Elvis Presley sounded compared to singers like Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige, or Beyonce.

Young people started singing and making music with more complicated syncopation compared to back in the day when rhythms were much simpler. But, the same 12 musical notes still exist. They just get shifted to different rhythm based on what's happening now.

Even rap is not immune to this effect. Think about how complicated the rhythm is for most rap compared to the days of "Rapper's Delight".

My point to this whole comparison is that if you build your song based on a great foundation of strong melody and lyrics, then it doesn't matter what happens with the rhythm too much because your song can be done in many styles and redone in the future. This will provide you with income well into the future because more than just one artist can perform it.

Destiny's Child redid "Emotions" written by the Bee Gees and it became a hit all over again and they get paid all over again decades later.

Study, study, study old songs to learn the craft and you'll have a huge advantage over your peers. Learn the reason why these songs are so catchy and why you can remember them even if you were a kid when you first heard them. They hook you and never let you go. So now YOU - GO FISH.
